50 Cent interview by: Scott Bejda
Verfasst am: 18.09.2009, 16:42

This interview continues from Murder Dog Magazine Vol 12 #1

Having a kid will change some people, but others it won’t even have an effect on them!

It changed me. I knew I was having a boy and I grew up without my father. My mom passed when I was only 8 and she hustled to take care of me. That was kind of how I got into hustling because when grandparents raise their kids at a time when shoes cost ten dollars, they had nine kids and it was hard on them. After my mom passed they tried to give me special treatment, but I wouldn’t ask for things because I knew it was a strain on them. I asked the people who would pay to have it with no problem.

Who were they?

Those were the people I knew from my mom who hustled. They looked out for me even further to the point that I was able to hustle. It sounds negative for someone to introduce a 12 year old kid into selling drugs, but if you think about it what else did I have at that time?

The system is set up to where you have to do shit like that to survive.

That is real! I say that to the general public and I want to explain it to them because they don’t understand. Hip Hop opens their eyes to it. You have a whole class of people who don’t experience it and they live far from it, but they listen to it and it’s just entertainment to them. It’s like just watching a movie based on a true story. It is confirmed to them through things that are written in the newspapers to make them understand that it actually exists. When they see somebody that comes from it and carries that same mentality it’s entertaining to watch them for a little bit.

Speaking of movies, do you have any of those coming up in the future?

I got a film that I am working on right now called "Hustler’s Ambition". It is loosely based on my life story. It’s coming out through Paramount/MTV. I will be shooting in April. I shoot two weeks in New York and two and a half months in Toronto.

Who will be co-starring with you?

There is a possibility that it will be Laurence Fishburn.

He is a great actor! Have you always wanted to work with him?

Yeah, I enjoy his movies like "King Of New York". It was dope!

Are there any surprises in the film that we don’t know about, since it is loosely about you?

You will get a chance to get a closer look at me. I think it will expose me to another audience. There are people who don’t listen to hip hop, but enjoy watching films. Your mom might not be into my rap records, but she might sit there and watch the film. She already heard of me from magazines or somewhere.

"Oh that 50 Cent ain’t such a bad guy"!

Ha, ha, ha!

How is the clothing line doing?

It is doing real good. We did $55,000,000 this year. I actually just launched G-Unit Women’s Clothing and that is cool. People don’t know, but I don’t have no pad and no sketch pen. I hired the best possible people with the clothes and put them in place. A lot of the male clothing was athletic inspired. Also G-Unit Kids is already in stores. I also did a deal with Vitamin Water, so I got my own water as well.

Where can you purchase the Vitamin Water?

You can get it all over the place. It is already in stores too. It was real cool doing the vitamin water deal, because it was a privately owned company. You know how some companies allow employees to have stock options, They put out the stock and allowed me to buy into the company so that was a good deal. It has 50% of your daily vitamin intake in the drink. I’m health conscious and work out all the time anyways.

Have you always been that way?

Hell no! I was 230 pounds before I got shot and I went all the way down to 167.

How did you lose all the weight?

I was bent up so bad because my leg was broke in like three different places. If you get shot nine times you will be bent up. I was doing therapy on these treadmills that had braces to hold you on the treadmill. As I was walking I got my legs back together and I continued to work out just for health purposes. It came into play when I got into being in the gym. I had to because I had no choice, but I fell back into good health and I stayed active.

What is your regular exercise routine like now?

I don’t go running every morning. Right now I’m on a promo tour, so I’m out here doing all kinds of shit. I’m out early in the morning doing morning shows and then I’m doing press all day, so it is crazy. I lift weights regular and do a little boxing. I love boxing!

Would you get into the ring?

I would like to fight half of the rap community, but to where they can’t sue me.

Why don’t you start up a rap boxing association?

They won’t do it! Do you ever look at them? Most of them are out of shape. They don’t even take what they do seriously. I could tell you right now what I think a star is! There are four components to it: quality material, performance, appearance and personality.

What about professional boxing?

Naw, I just play around with it. I used to like boxing when I was small.

Who was your favorite fighter?

Pernel Whitaker!

What kind of rap were you bumping growing up?

I had so many different influences coming up like Rakim, KRS-1, Big Daddy Kane. Big Daddy Kane had his time. I used to like Too Short too.

Too Short jumped the independent thing off hard in the Bay! Was the independent game good to you?

I had a record that sold independent and I made a lot of money off of it too. It wasn’t until I already had a deal commercially. I kind of utilized the energy that the major companies wanted to bring it to them through their market, but I distributed it as and independent and sold it. I sold over 300,000 copies of an independent record and that was Guess Who’s Back?

Who is next in the G-Unit to come out?

Tony Yayo and we saved the best for last, baby! Olivia’s project will be out in May and Yayo will be coming out in late May or early June.

Describe Tony Yayo’s style?

Yayo is out of control! That’s why he hasn’t been out to this point. He still is the way we were before the big transition. Right now he is on Federal parole on house arrest. He has an ankle bracelet, so he can’t move around a lot. I was trying to wait until we can get him to travel, but it is time for his record to come out. They will get a chance to see his energy and his energy is incredible. He is from South Jamaica too.

Have you known him for a while?

They grew up around me. I have to watch him and Buck. I’m always on their shoulder, because they will get in trouble.

Why haven’t they made the transition like you have?

They have that, but they still hold onto the things that kept people from playing with them before the success.

They are ready for shit to jump off?

They don’t mind! If there is a problem then "OK cool!" It really don’t bother them. In so many ways I would address situations like that too because that is where we come from. They are a little more in your face and they are ready for that.

Since your success have you been in any sticky situations?

No, it has been pretty much smooth for me. Through all of the talking going on and all of the things they have been saying and the hype there hasn’t been nothing really.
