Verfasst am: 19.08.2007, 11:44

Aftermath Music hooked up with G-Unit's Hot Rod to chop it up about his youth, how he got into the game, hooked up with 50 Cent & G-Unit, his upcoming album "Fastlane", the internet, mixtapes and he spoke on 50 Cent's new album, G-Unit and so much more.

INTERVIEW: March 8, 2007

Aftermathmusic.com:
What you been up too? How you been man?

Hot Rod:
Shit man, just been making music, making money, having sex, ya know the usual. But definitely keepin it extra swaggery.

Aftermathmusic.com:
So what you doin' right now man?

Hot Rod:
I'm in the studio right now with 50 Cent, Cinque, Young Buck, The Goons and there's also a few screezys but they ain't too cute. (laughs)

Aftermathmusic.com:
Okay lets go way back. Where did you get your name Hot Rod from?

Hot Rod:
well, I was originally Young Rod back in the dizz-ay, but when I came to the Unit I changed it to Hot Rod, beacause there's too many "Youngs" out there ya understand. But since the name Hot Rod has been taken for copyright reasons, we put "Young" in front of it. I prefer to just be called Hot Rod a.k.a Mick Swagger a.k.a. Black Bauer a.k.a. Yo girls study buddy a.k.a. The boy with all the a.k.a.'s.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Ok The Mr. AKA, who influenced you to start rappin?

Hot Rod:
I've always been into music from an early age. I've always been into the beats before lyrics, so I actually started out as a producer and ended up fallin in love with rap while doin it. I just had so much style and sag on the mic that people couldn't help but gravitate toward my music. I've influenced a lot of people musically that I've come in contact with. And its just because of my style and my confidence in being myself as an artist.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Thats good, how would you describe your style?

Hot Rod:
My style's fuckin amazing. (laughs) like, wow, shit, I am the shit on the mic I'm number one, but I am also number two because I'm the shit. (laughs) Yeeeaaaa. Damn I need to stop drinking this damn Red Bull and Jager.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How did you hook up with 50 Cent and G-Unit Records?

Hot Rod:
I sent in a demo, Shout out to Taurus Scott because I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What have you been doing since you been signed to G-Unit?

Hot Rod:
Everything I wasn't doing before I was signed to G-Unit. Recording with a buncha cats I never thought I'd be recording with, performin, all types of shit.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How many albums are you signed to do on G-Unit?

Hot Rod:
I'm signed for 47 albums. I'm gonna have my children's children finish out my contract for me. (laughs) Nah I'm signed for 6 albums.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Okay lets talk about the album "Fastlane". Who's handeling the production and how was it working with them?

Hot Rod:
Shit I've worked wit the best. I've got tracks from Eminem, Dr. Dre, Polow Da Don, Jr. Rotem, Jake One, Pete Rock, Dangerous LLC, Lab Ox, MRell, Soundsquad, J Henn, Sha Money XL Kadis N Sean and a few more I can't think of. Its gonna be a classic!

Aftermathmusic.com:
Whos going to be on the album ?

Hot Rod:
So far 50 Cent, Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, Olivia, Mary J. Blige, Cinque, Akon, and a few others. I wanna work with are Snoop Dogg, Omarion, Chamillionaire, and Pharrell.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Do we have a date for that yet?

Hot Rod:
Sometimes in May.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What can we expect from the album?

Hot Rod:
A classic.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Do you expect to sell platinum? Is that realistic in your mind?

Hot Rod:
If I don't sell platinum I'll kill myself twice.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Wow, I mean the artists arent selling as much as they used too, what do you think is the main cause for that? Do you think the internet helps some artists too? Is it just negative or positive in some ways too?

Hot Rod:
Ipods n shit, limewire. They fuckin up sells, but that just mean niggas gotta make quality music as well as have superstar qualities to succeed in the game nowadays. Consumers are buying into the artists these days, so you gotta be onpoint to sell the records man. Gotta go hard to da paint on these niggas.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Okay lets talk about the streetsingle "Be Easy" with Mary J. Blige. When you first heard that she's doin the chorus. What were your thoughts?

Hot Rod:
I was like 'shut the fukk up yall lyin".

Aftermathmusic.com:
How do you feel about that record?

Hot Rod:
It was an incredible warm up record, just to let everybody know, I can get whoever I want on a record. I mean, shit man I got Elvis Presley on a record. I hit him up like 'yo elvis man, bring yo ass to the studio, I got some shit for you to get on.' He was like 'aight my nigg I'll be there in 10.'

Aftermathmusic.com:
What is the first single from the album?

Hot Rod:
It called "Rock 2 it" and it's crazy. If you don't like it kill yourself.

Aftermathmusic.com:
You worked with a lot of producers and rappers over the years would you like to do a collabo album with anyone that you havent worked with?

Hot Rod:
Pharrell and Timbo. Them niggas are damn near musical gods.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How do you go about making a song? Do you always write to the beat or sometimes you get an idea and then build a beat to the lyrics?

Hot Rod:
Nah I need the beat. I have 1 zillion different flows I fuck with and depending is how decide what flow I'm gonna use.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Please tell us more about 50's new album. What can fans expect from his next record?

Hot Rod:
Its called Before I Self Destruct. Buy it or kill yourself.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Are you going to be on his album?

Hot Rod:
Buy it Or kill yourself

Aftermathmusic.com:
Speaking of which, how involved are Dre and Eminem on 50's third Aftermath/Shady LP?

Hot Rod:
Buy it Or kill yourself

Aftermathmusic.com:
Ha ha ok ok. Is it tough for the G-Unit Label to impress 50 Cent being that he's signed to Shady/Aftermath and directly works to impress Dr. Dre & Eminem?

Hot Rod:
There is pressure and sometimes it is tough impressing Fif sometimes because he's a perfectionist. But it makes us better artists at the end of the day.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Does beef keep G-Unit in shape? Because sometimes it seems that some of the beefs could have been avoided and on the other side, sometimes beef brings the best ouf of an artist!

Hot Rod:
Beef is fun till the guns come out, shots fired man down.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Do you think that some of these beefs are really on some personal shit, or are they just trying to get your attention?

Hot Rod:
Some niggas think beefin is a game when its not. Most niggas are just trying to get attention, but they don't understand that there's knuckleheads out there that are lookin for a reason to do some stupid shit. And that's how niggas get touched over the beef shit.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Are you planning to get involved in any on-going beefs that G-Unit is involved with?

Hot Rod:
Lyrically I'll smack niggas around man, but I aint tying to get involved unless I get the word. That's not really my lane. I'm for the fun side of the music. But if I need to toss a bar around and let cats know I aint no chump I will. I love hiphop and I'm down for competition, but I aint promoting beef or killin or none of that kind of shit.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Whats up with our own company 150 ent. Can you tell us more?

Hot Rod:
It's my label that's about to blow in a hot sec. Stay tuned.

Aftermathmusic.com:
If you werent successful in this rap game what would you be doing?

Hot Rod:
Probably having sex everyday (laughs). Naw but I'd be with my bro making that legal money, doin gloans and shit. I was getting into it before, but 50 called a nigga and gave me a shot. But yea my bro is pushing a 760 so that moneys real good.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What do you do when you arent writing songs? What do you do in your spare time?

Hot Rod:
Im spending my damn money, doin 160 on these beautiful arizona highways, or gettin tipsy at the crib with my niggas. Oh and I be on the myspace extra heavy. Wussup Tom! That's my nigga right there. Tom be holding me down.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Ok, who do you look up too in the Phoenix rap scene? Who do you think are doing it big right now?

Hot Rod:
I look up to myself first and foremost. (laughs) Seriously yea, myself, I look up to my nigga Cinque, because he's an all around hustla, leader, real nigga, and good person. His deal is comin next. His flow is very swaggery with a street edge to it. He has street swagger. Much love to my nigga.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What do you wish to accomplish in the game?

Hot Rod:
I wanna be, excuse me, I'm gonna be a multi-million selling artist, get my label 150 ENT crackin, puttin AZ and Sactown on my back, piss off all the hating ass niggas, and be respected in the game as a nigga that has that new west coast swag sound. I'm that new nigga man. And I'm a beast. Call me Black Bauer. Shouts out to my peoples Kiefer Sutherland.

Aftermathmusic.com:
That's about it for the questions, I appreciate you taking the time to talk to us, do you have any last words?

Hot Rod:
Buy my shit or kill yourself. Oh and hit me on the myspace www.myspace.com/rodt also www.younghotrod.com. Shouts to my bumsquad dj niggas for holding me down. Also my heavy hittaz and shadyville niggas. Shouts to my bosses J treezy, Mr. Meez, Nick Nastee, Cinque, all my man up squad niggas, and Tineshia the greatest sister in the world. I gotta go take the lambo out for a spin and catch a stunt on the strip right. Holla at ya boy anytime. Ok? Oh yea. Hip Hop's alive bitches.

What's been good with you lately Rod?

Hot Rod: Shit just grindin hittin the mix tapes hard finishin up my album. I'm goin hard to the paint right now tryin show these lil niggas what time it is ya know?

SHH: Word… So youre trying to shoe em you got it? But you hit the mainstream out of nowhere and critics (myself including) felt that the product wasn't there yet. What do you have to say to those who think you won't pull off a solid and successful mainstream album?

Hot Rod: I say just wait and see what I hit yall wit next. If you still aint feelin' the kid, then there's somethin wrong wit you. I mean, I got the style, the bars, the songwriting abilities, the looks.... its all there, but you know what it is, there's a lot of niggas out there hatin on the boy cause he with The Unit, but then again there's a lot of love too... Actually -Hate is the new love- So it feels good... yes so, so good...

SHH: It's no secret that you're sound is similar to 50 Cent's when he does his "club" records and he's been quoted in interviews as saying it too. Similar flow and swagger on the tracks etc... Now back to what the critics are saying. It seems like they use this as fuel against your character. Almost to suggest you're a "50 Cent clone." What do you have to say to them in reference to that?

Get 2 FREE iPod NanosHot Rod: Well I'd rather be clone of a nigga who sold 20 million records wit two albums than a clone of a nigga who sold 100k with five albums. I'd love to be a rich clone rather than a poor one. (Laughs) Nah, but seriously I don't take offense to it because at the end of the day that means I make good quality music. Plus I have so many different flows and patterns its kind of hard to say I sound like one particular artist. I have my own sound and its my responsibility to provide the public with more material so they can experience my sound.

SHH: Cool… So moving on… We noticed you've been fairly quiet when it comes to the beefs in the camp, from the Diddy beef to the now growing Cam' Ron & Dipset beef. Do you ever get the urge to jump in the ring and just say, "Fuck it I'ma get at em too"?

Hot Rod: Yeah I get the urge at times cause I have that battle rapper mentality deep down inside. I use to slay niggas when I was on the battle rap shit until I realized that's not gonna get me to the bread so, yeah you'll probably hear me toss a shady ass bar here and there, but not too crazy. I'm a funny nigga so I know how to get at niggas strategically
and have they own boys laughin at em. I got a bunch of skits about niggas that I made for fun and I might bring em out just to get the engine goin a lil bit.

SHH: Let's talk about the internet. It's no secret you're a MySpace junkie and you get a lot of love on the net from fans all over the world. How crucial do you feel the net has been to your current success?

Hot Rod: I mean.... I use to jack beats off of Soundclick.com and make hits and get them on the radio. I fucks with MySpace hard because it connects you to the world so the networking capabilities are endless. I actually met up with the nigga who got my music in 50's hand (Shouts out to Taurus Scott my nigga). I met him off of the local Arizona site 602streets.com. So the internet played a huge part in my journey to becoming a superstar. Shouts out to all the dot coms, dot orgs, dot govs, and dot nets... (Laughs) oh and the dot edu's...

SHH: Your critics on the net have been vast as well. Most notably SOHH.com and Allhiphop.com, they've went hard on you and G-Unit over the past few months. What sparked off all this controversy?

Hot Rod: Well some cat did walk in on me and his girl a while back, so he might be the same nigga that runs them sites (Laughs). Nah, but really these internet sites don't really determine who's hot or what's hot. Nor do they play a significant role in the actual real world. For example you can take a nigga like Lupe Fiasco ok? If you live life in the cyber world, he went platinum. Those are the type of artist that get love on the internet. You can't really get caught up in those sites because you lose sight of reality. I don't know if it true but I heard the nigga Joe Budden and Game be readin' shit niggas be sayin' about them online and be respondin to em, getting mad and shit. You can't get involved in an internet war with no 14 year old knucklehead. He already won just by gettin' your attention and I did read some shit though on Allhiphop I believe it had me laughin for a while. It said somethin ‘like " Arguing on the internet is like the Special Olympics.... whether you win or lose..... You're still retarded." That shits classic... shouts out to SOHH.gov (Laughs) and Allhiphop.com... They help me keep up on my Hip Hop news. Oh and shouts out to downloadable doo rags and niggas who type they gang signs (Laughs).

SHH: So how do you feel about Allhiphop.com doing the fluff news piece about the rock band that had a song called "50 Cent Is A Pussy" that was conveniently posted in the middle of this whole controversy?

Hot Rod: Well you know these sites are like tabloids and the Jerry Springer show. They live off of controversial issues to try and gather more traffic to their sites... Ya know? So they can charge more for advertising space and shit... So it all comes down to the money and also the hate for G-Unit. But in the end it doesn't really bother anyone on the team because we getting money. Now if we weren't getting money, then wed have a problem. "We don't give a fuck if we sell one or one million but we think you should, cause if we only sell one then out comes the hood" -Jigga (G-Mix)

SHH: Ha! Youre funny my dude, but for real moving on. You've been signed now for a year. How's life changed for you?

Hot Rod: No sleep, no free time, mo money, mo problems mo hoes, a lot of hate, a lot of love... A few fake niggas. Yeah I see you...

SHH: Lets talk about your album "Fastlane." It has been bumped from summer 2006, to fourth quarter 2006, to first quarter 2007; to I don't even know anymore. Are you going to
come out before 50 Cent's new album or are they going to hold off till later in 2007 when you can drop in a healthy fourth quarter?

Hot Rod: This shit is chess it ain't checkers (Shouts to Denzel). I held a meeting with the big wigs at the label and we decided for me to drop after 50. I'm gonna go on tour with fif in May leading up to his release in June and then come after him in the 4th quarter of this year. The world needs this new 50 album. Believe it or not, this album s shittin on G.R.O.D.T. (Get Rich Or Die Tryin) man... He took it back, plus he has legendary features. Its another classic bitches...

SHH: How do you feel about your first single "Be Easy" featuring Mary J. Blige? It had a lukewarm response to it on the radio & video channels when it dropped last Fall. What do
you think was the problem with that record now that you look back on it?

Hot Rod: It was my warm up record and it did what it was supposed to. I have face recognition and I've been co-signed by a legend. If I could change one thing, I think the video could have been better. It didn't capture my personality the way it should've you feel me? So that's one of the reasons I feel some people didn't fully accept the record. The joint was a good look though definitely.

SHH: You shot the video for the tentative second single the track "Rock To It" in December. When are we going to see the new single hit the streets?

Hot Rod: We might leak it in a couple weeks. Shits a banger... You people need this song in your life.

SHH: How is the rest of the album coming along? How deep are you into the recording and give us an update on who's going to be on it?

Hot Rod: I'm pickin out the tracks I want to keep now and its hard cause I recorded to tracks from Dre, Em, Polow Da Don, Pete Rock, Jake One, Cannon, Premo, Hi-Tek, Dangerous LLC, Jiggolo, Kadis N Sean, Rockwilder, J Henn, M.Rell, Lab Ox, SoundSquad... The shits crazy man... Buy it or kill yourself...

SHH: Since were on the subject of other artists. Who are you feeling who's out there (signed or unsigned)?

Hot Rod: I'm feelin the nigga Wayne. This nigga is goin hard to the paint. His bars are extra shiny right now and his swag is on point. He in a zone right now... Kanye always amazes me (Throw some D's on that bitch!). That's my shit maaaan... Jay, that nigga is so grown right now… He's so damn advanced its crazy. And for the record, Nas didn't win
that battle. Jay didn't smash him but to me, he won at the buzzer. And why didn't anyone talk about the Blueprint 2 track where he murdered Nas? That was crazy... I know I'm getting sidetracked but the nigga said... “Cause the nigga wear koofi it don't mean that he bright/ Cause you don't understand him it don't mean that he nice/ It just means you don't understand all the bullshit that he write/ Is it "Oochie Wally Wally" or is it "One Mic?"/ Is it "Black Girl Lost" or "Shorty owe you for ice?" That shit was hard... I wonder if Jay still feels that way... hmmm...

SHH: I definitely feel you on that and at the end of the day Nas works for Jay now so Jay won on so many levels.

Hot Rod: Yeah…

SHH: Tell us about your crew "The Man Up Squad."

Hot Rod: We deep as fuck and between us and Phearless/No Remorse we runnin Arizona. Its a movement and we about to beast our way into the game. Keep ya eyes open.

SHH: What side projects can we expect from you between now and your albums?

Hot Rod: I did some music for a freestyle basketball game that is being introduced to the U.S. this year. It has like 30 million players in Japan alone so that's a big look for me and (Lloyd) Banks. I'm also dropping mix tapes with Whoo Kid, Drama, Woogie, Rob E Rob, Warrior and some others so I can show niggas how nasty I am wit the bars. I'm also doin hood DVD's, shootin hood videos and all types of shit like that. I'm goin hard to the paint with my nigga Frenchie wit Cocaine City. I just shot a video wit him and my nigga Mazaradi Foxx... DUMBOUTS!!!!!

SHH: I think were about done. Got anything to add or any words of wisdom for the fans and readers?
Hot Rod: Shouts to all my niggas...My sister, J Treez, Mr. Meez, Nick Nasty, 150 ENT, Man Up, Cinque, Jiggolo, Charlie West, The whole Unit, my BumSquad DJ niggas, Broadweezy, Cocaine City, my Natomas niggas, DPH and Strawberry Manor niggas, 916, 602, 623, 480, 520, Str8hiphop.com (H-Dollar & the whole staff for the support form the gate), Allhiphop.com, SOHH.org, Hiphopgame.com (Tom), all my haters, Gunitworld.com (Jeff), Jack Bauer, Terrence and my baby Rocsi and everyone I forgot... “Hate is the new love bitches....”
