Jay-Z ist zur Zeit Präsident des US-amerikanischen Plattenlabels Def Jam, sein Vertrag läuft allerdings Ende des Monats aus. Aktuelle Verhandlungen zwischen dem Mogul und der Universal Music Group scheinen in eine Sackgasse zu laufen. Eine Quelle seitens Def Jam erklärte gegenüber der New Yorker Daily News, dass Jay-Z für seine neue "Amtszeit" viel zu viel Geld verlange:

"He wanted big, big money that was way out of sync with the realities of today's record business. People have lost count of how many times he's come out of retirement."

Auch Island/Def Jam CEO L.A. Reid und dessen Chef Doug Morris finden die neuen Forderungen von Jigga total überzogen, zumal in den letzten Monaten viele Mitarbeiter entlassen wurden und der Rapper nicht unbedingt viel Zeit in seinem Büro verbringt:

"Everybody knows he's not around the office much. Everybody at Universal loves him, but they can't justify paying him the money he wants when so many people have been laid off."

Die Verhandlungen sind allerdings noch nicht beendet.

Jigga feierte am 4.Dezember in Paris seinen 38.Geburtstag.

Letzte Woche berichtete eine nahe Quelle seitens Def Jam gegenüber der New Yorker Daily News, dass die Verhandlungen über eine Vertragsverlängerung von Jay-Z bei Def Jam als CEO stagnierten, da er zu exzessive Geldansprüche erhob .

Als man Jigga kürzlich befragte, ob an den Berichten etwas Wahres sei, sagte er schlicht und einfach: „Nein“. Weiterhin hieß es, die Verhandlungsgespräche seien noch im vollen Gange und der Vertrag würde in den kommenden Wochen abgeschlossen werden.

“It's not about money. That's really the last thing,” sagte Jay-Z. “Of course, as a person that does these type of things and puts his heart and soul into it — and it's effective, as the Grammys would indicate — you want to be compensated for what you do. But it's really not about money. It's really about the future of the music business, and not wasting anyone's time."

"I don't ever want to sit in a seat just to sit in a seat,” fuhr er fort. “I could be off doing something else that's beneficial to the future of the music business as well as myself. So it's not about money! I mean, you couldn't pay me enough. And I don't mean that in a cocky way.”

Auf die Frage, ob sich Jigga nächstes Jahr noch bei Def Jam sehe, wusste er nicht so recht zu antworten: "Yeah, I think I don't know. Let me not even say that. I don't know. We'll see how it goes.”
